Plaza Hotel Closes for 4-Year Renovation

The iconic Plaza Hotel in Midtown Manhattan has closed its doors for a major renovation project expected to last over four years. The hotel, located on Fifth Avenue, will undergo extensive work to restore its historic facade.

The Plaza, which opened in 1907, is both a New York City landmark and a National Historic Landmark. The renovation will adhere to strict historic preservation standards, requiring detailed planning and coordination. The hotel is operated by Fairmont Hotels and Resorts.

The Plaza has been a significant part of New York City’s history and pop culture, famously appearing in the 1992 movie “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.”

The Plaza last closed in 2005 for a major redevelopment that added over 180 condominiums alongside more than 200 hotel rooms.

The complexity of the facade work and the need to comply with preservation guidelines are key factors in the lengthy closure. The hotel has changed ownership several times and undergone multiple renovations throughout its history.
